When you are buying a new computer you need to decide what your budget is, first and foremost. Then, you need to decide what you will be using the machine for.
The majority of users simply need to use the internet and a word processor. For this most computers will do, and if buying a PC you might as well get the cheaper Celeron processor than spend a premium on a Pentium machine.
If you have kids, it might be worth getting one of the multimedia options, with a scanner, printer and digital camera and microphone all batched with the machine.
If you are a games player, you should spend more on a really good graphics card, and also consider a decent audio sound card too.
